Web design

Web design is one of the most important elements you need to think about when developing a new site, after all the design is what you costumer is going to be seeing, so the better it looks the better it makes your company look. Web design can be expensive, but it doesn't necessarily have to confuse you. When you first look into web design it cam all sound pretty intimidating, as its often explained by having to use a variety of different codes, from HTML to XHTML, it can seem like nothing makes sense and if you aren't a technical whiz kid like most people, it won't make any sense no matter how many times you read it over. So we thought that we would try and make it a bit more simple, giving you the key elements of web design in normal terms, not fancy words that no-one understands! So below you can find some easy steps to making your own great web design;

Before you start anything you need to plan your web design, there are a number of things to think about like; who are you trying to appeal to, what is the function/purpose of the site and what content your want your site to have on it. So let's look at these questions;

  • Target market - making your site as much suited to the needs and wants of your target customers will help to increase the amount of money you make out of you business, for example, if you are targeting young people they are more than likely going to be pretty clued up on technology, so they won't need as much assistance, unlike if you are appealing to an older audience, some of whom might not be as clued up as younger people so a clear design with a descent amount of instructions and a help' bar feature would be useful.

  • Purpose of your site - this will more than likely be the first thing that is dealt with when setting up a business and a website, knowing your purpose is what helps you to move forward, to identify all the other elements of your business, and this is no different when creating a website. Known what you want your site to do is the first step to making it happen, because after you know the purpose you can set a number of short term and long term strategies in order to reach the overall goal.

  • Content - writing content for a site can be difficult if you don't know what to write, of you don't know enough about what you're meant to be writing about. However it's more than likely the whole project will either be your own personal business or about the business you work for, so it should be much easier. If not, making a list of everything that needs to be on your site on a piece of paper should be a starting block that you can go onto expand on, this is also another part that requires you knowing the purpose as you will need to include this in the content for your site so that it is clear to our customers what the aim, services and support your business is about/offers.

    In the most simple terms good web design is all about usability, making it as user friendly as possible the appearance, you should aim for a design that fits throughout, a professional yet simple design, content, as stated above it should be relevant and clear and ultimately the visibility, your site needs to be easy to find otherwise you won't make anything no matter how great it looks, if people can't find it all the above are useless.

    What pages should you have on a site? Well the first place to start should be what's easiest for you, most people start with a home page, this should contain a welcome message and a few words about the business, this is something that can be followed up by an about us page, don't fill the welcome page with paragraphs about your company, this won't appeal to everyone! You can also choose a splash page this is more suited to larger organisations operating on an international basis as a splash page is normally a language selection page.

    Other pages that you need on your site will depend on your business; pages that are relevant to your site will vary from others because it's all about what you have to offer. After you have completed the pages, they will normally be linked together via a menu, this is through the use of hyperlinks, and is normally something that is already part of the basic website you start off with. Within your web pages you will also have an HTML code that links with the sites URL (the address you type in the address bar i.e. hello.com).

    These steps will allow you to make a simple and effective website, though of course reading into other elements after you have mastered these will only help you to increase the success of your site even more. The next steps you can look at are things like; layout types, function vs form and partnerships with other sites.
